October Is Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Support, Healing and Hope Are Available AT THE YWCA NWLA

Every October, communities across the country recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM)—a time to stand with survivors, increase awareness, encourage healthy relationships and remind those experiencing domestic violence that they do not have to navigate their circumstances alone.

At YWCA of Northwest Louisiana, this work extends far beyond the month of October. Supporting individuals and families affected by trauma is an important part of our commitment to creating a safer, healthier and more empowered community.

Domestic Violence Can Affect Anyone

Domestic violence does not discriminate. It can affect individuals of any age, background, income level or circumstance.

It is also important to understand that domestic violence is not always physical. Abuse can take many forms, including emotional and verbal abuse, intimidation, financial control, isolation, manipulation and other behaviors intended to exert power or control over another person.

Recognizing the signs is an important step toward helping ourselves and the people around us. Creating space for honest conversations about healthy relationships can also help individuals recognize when a relationship may be causing harm.

You Are Not Alone

For someone experiencing domestic violence or recovering from a traumatic experience, asking for help can be difficult. That is why accessible, compassionate support matters.

YWCA of Northwest Louisiana offers FREE, trauma-informed counseling services designed to support individuals and families impacted by domestic violence and other traumatic experiences.

Trauma-informed care recognizes that every person's experience is different. Our goal is to provide a supportive environment where individuals can feel heard, respected and empowered as they move forward.

We want every person in our community to know:

💜 You deserve to feel safe.💜 You deserve to be heard.💜 You deserve support.💜 You are not alone.

Awareness Must Lead to Action

Domestic Violence Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to have important conversations, but creating change requires continued education, advocacy and support throughout the year.

Throughout October, YWCA of Northwest Louisiana will share educational information, mental health resources, healthy relationship guidance and conversations designed to support survivors and increase awareness.

We encourage our community to join us. Learn about the signs of abuse. Check in on the people you care about. Talk with young people about healthy relationships. Listen without judgment when someone shares their experience. And help connect those who need assistance with trusted resources.

Small actions can become an important part of creating a community where everyone has the opportunity to feel safe, supported and empowered.

Need Support? We're Here.
