You are invited to join in the celebration of our 100th birthday at our come-and-go reception with cupcakes and champagne! 🧁🥂
YWCA Northwest Louisiana is celebrating 100 years since its establishment in 1925! 🎉 Our legacy first began when Margaret Hutchinson established a branch of the YWCA in Shreveport, Louisiana. The new organization was housed in a small office space downtown; a reflection of the era, there was a second location for women of color in McAllen, TX.
After time and strenuous efforts, the YWCA in northwest Louisiana eventually integrated to become one organization.
The building downtown currently Marlene Yu Museum (710 Travis St) was originally a custom-built space for YWCA NWLA in the 1950s. The space served as both a shelter and recreation center for women and girls, allowing them to rehabilitate and also find community around them. These early days of our organization are extra meaningful because of the bravery, strength, determination, and smarts required of the individuals building the foundation; this year, we celebrate the many decades of the effort, hard work, and various eras and transitions of the YWCA NWLA.
We have adapted to different forms over the years, and yet the mission to be of service as a resource center for women and girls has always remained the same. We look forward to celebrating with our community and to many more years of empowering women and girls! 🥂
